As I said before, I did not always see the allure of them, mostly in part because I did not completely grasp the idea and at the time I was introduced to them only the TRAVELER'S COMPANY was making covers and things for them that I could see. To be honest, plain brown leather was not very appealing and because it was leather, it was expensive.
About a year later, Jane Davenport came out with her art supply line and this included her own version of the midori, which she called a "Butterfly Book." I was in love with the cover at the time and I purchased one for myself. I could not, however, bring myself to spend $5 on an insert that was only four pieces of paper for art, so I made my own inserts with cheap watercolor paper. This worked for a little while and I was pleased, but soon I gave up this book and let it gather dust on my shelf. Later, when I was looking up journaling ideas, I came across a youtube of Rainbowholic and I saw how she used a traveler's journal for documenting her daily life and travels in Japan. This inspired me to work on the journal again, and I purchased some official TRAVELER'S COMPANY inserts that were blank pages so I could use it as a sketchbook. Since about April I have been using this journal to do drawings, paintings, Mer-May challenge, and some urban sketching. I have filled it with so many sketchbooks that the cover no longer fits around them properly and I may have to cull the amount of books I have in there or risk having to purchase a larger one. (Spoiler, I will more than likely just cull to save myself money.) Having used this journal as a sketchbook for a while, I can now see the full allure of using it as a bullet journal. You can buy all sorts of inserts to fit the different types of journaling you want to do and the papers you like: lined, blank, dot grid, even black paper. Adding in extra books is simple and can be fun to do with colorful elastics or silicone bands to keep things together. While I am excited to see what things come out from the creative minds of those people who start to use this as their bullet journal, I am content to keep going with my Leuchttrum1917 book. I prefer the feel and size of the A5 journal I have and that they are all in one place when I want to save them for later. True, you could gather up your inserts into one place for later, but with different ones it can be harder to keep track of in the long run in terms of timeline and collections; at least for myself. I enjoy picking up three bullet journals and seeing the progress of myself over time versus having to search through an unspecified amount of inserts based on various things to see how I was during the course of a week or month. Still, to see the things that people create will be amazing. Some of the things that are out now are just wonderful, especially things by Rainbowholic who shares my general aesthetic, and the future can only show us more beautiful journals to come.
