Hobonichi is a Japanese company that focuses on stationary and journaling supplies. They have lovely items for sale and if you click on their name at the start of this paragraph you will be taken to their site and see what I mean. There are lot of beautiful items for sale and their designers are great. The only problem was, they were also so expensive. A Hobonichi cover for an A5 side journal cost upwards of $130 US. I could not justify spending that much on a book cover, and the one I really liked was sold out to boot, so I went around online to find something that was Hobonichi like, but not the same, for a price I could reasonably afford. I found a ton of knock-offs on sites like Wish, but I was wary to order from there for I feared that the item I got would be cheap, fall apart, or be completely wrong in some other way. While I was doing some searches, I came across a shop online called Wishing Whale Co that was selling Hobonichi-like accessories and covers. After a lot of internal back and forth, I decided to give this company a shot and ordered myself one of their covers. When it arrived, I was amazed how much like a real Hobonichi it looked like. The real test though came when I tried to put my Leuchttrum journal into it, and I was so very relieved when it fit. I was even more happy when I tested my ability to still write on the pages and found I was not bothered or hindered at all. Shortly after purchasing it, I did get a small ink spot on it which prompted me to look into getting a cover. I did purchase a bird and star motif cover from Hobonichi, from their cover-on-cover series, that fit this Wishing Whale Co cover perfectly. I also saw a video on YouTube from Rainbowholic about how she decorated her Hobonichi cover and I semi followed suit, though I only have one sticker on there and it technically permanent. But, given how it looks with the cover, I think it’s perfect. The picture of the sticker, the unicorn to the bottom left, shows the stick on the base paper still as I was not sure I wanted to keep it there permanently and with the sticker being slightly transparent, I knew some of the color intensity would be lost. I bit the bullet and put her on the journal cover. She still looks great and you can get one of your own from the lovely Kaleigh Bulford. (Link at the bottom of the post!) A cover like this is not necessary for bullet journaling and no one should feel pressured into getting one in order to be the 'perfect' bullet journalist. (Spoiler: perfect doesn't exist.) For me, I wanted a nice cover to decorate and to have fun with so I picked my Wishing Whale Co Hoboinichi up and I am so very glad I did.
